
Homeless Prevention Counseling, Home Ownership Education and Counseling Classes and Emergency Assistance
- Mortgage Counseling assists persons facing a potential foreclosure re-negotiate their loan payment schedules with the lender, and provides ongoing budget counseling when necessary in order to help the individual or family maintain their home.
- Home Equity Conversion Mortgage Counseling assists clients who are 62 years or older with the complexities of converting the equity in their home to income that is used to pay living expenses or medical expenses.
- Pre- and Post Purchase Home Buyer Education Classes gives first-time home buyers the information they need to become informed consumers and the ability to make sound decisions regarding home ownership, credit, and family budgeting.
- Renter Assistance includes information about rent subsidy programs, rights and responsibilities of tenants and lease and rental agreements.
- Homeless Prevention Direct Assistance for Rent, Mortgage and Utilities provides cash assistance to families and individuals who have exhausted all other resources in an effort to prevent homelessness. Clients must provide identification as well as verification of need (landlord letter, eviction notice, utility bill, etc). An individual (or family unit) is eligible for assistance once every twelve months with a three times per lifetime limit. Emergency Assistance for utilities is available in Pueblo, Otero, Crowley, Bent, Baca, Prowers and Kiowa counties.
Homeless Prevention funds come from a variety of sources and each grant establishes criteria for assistance. Most funds are limited to a specific geographic area and are restricted to rent, mortgage or utility assistance.
